I swear…government workers as a category are some of the most incompetent, pass-the-buck, “ride the paycheck to retirement”, non-caring, group of ‘paper-pushing-producers’ there is.
Oh, yes, automatons, most of them.
Most of them are not aware about the consequences of their “work”.
But interesting, since they don’t know, they are not aware, it would be somehow really cruel to, let’s say, punish them.

Bureaucracy everywhere apparantly attracts low-performers with a well-defined need for (financial) stability and an opportunity to excert a more or less large amount of power over “regular people”.
I tend to never underestimate people. Most people are more intelligent than they get credit for. They may be lazy or appear ignorant but give them an opportunity connected with some form of gratification (a new paygrade, a better rank, whatever) and most will act in their own best interests.
This strategy worked exceptionally well for me in life so far.
Therefore I don’t think that most politicians are stupid. They may be psychopaths but they are usually not stupid or otherwise they wouldn’t sit where they are.
Likewise morons usually don’t sit at the most important desks – neither in the “free” economy nor in offices of the public or military administration.
(Note that I wrote “important” – not “well paid” desks.)
Desks like the one that controls the alarm application on Hawaii.
That’s why I doubt that the operator casually selected exactly the wrong entry in the pulldown menu in this critical application (like it was reported).
Sorry, but I’m not convinced at all that this was a non-deliberate false alert by some low-performer.
These people are usually selected well – and one criteria is how eager they are to please their superiors or “do the right thing”.
The only exception nowadays is apparently the presidential office where family relations are apparently more important than competence but on the other hand you only need a trained monkey for *this* particular job…
But what we mostly have are people that are willing “to follow procedure”.

In all other cases it’s always “Oh they? Yeah, they were simply incompetent!” and “No, no – won’t happen again!”

After *every* terror incident some malpractices of police and secret agencies come to light and every single time it always boils down to “Mea culpa – we made an error in judgement (=incompetence), sorry!”.

*We* know – or at least assume – that most terror incidents are state-sponsored or even state-controlled (mihop, lihop…).
This however also was a terror incident – against their own population!
And I don’t need anyone here to remind about 9/11 – the “mother of all incompetence demonstrations” by all agencies, but especially the FBI.
While I do agree that this entire explanation is ridiculous, I don’t agree that people doing such jobs wouldn’t be prone to making such mistakes. Especially if it’s a relatively small deviation from something that’s done regularly.
I completely disagree that people in those positions are PRONE to make mistakes of such caliber.
Of course every human being can make a mistake but we don’t talk about street cleaners or dog coiffeurs here.

You appear to be missing hands on experience with software users whom, less lucid they are become more prone to find all sorts of bugs in said software, something its creator wouldn’t think of in a thousand years.
Tendency to misuse and abuse is the second nature to these people.

I agree with your last sentence. However, I don’t see a connection to stupidity.
I obviously don’t know anything about your experience, but if I have to explain to you that a possibly bad user interface combined with an unthinking, unresponsive mind put under pressure can lead to a catastrophe, there is something amiss here. I don’t know what to tell ya, but we can certainly agree to disagree.
About 10 years ago for a college class, I toured the FEMA Headquarters for Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and 68 federally recognized tribal nations).
Actually, it was in a massive underground bunker built during the Cold War around 1960 in North Texas.
Lime Army Green ugly dismal tiles lined the walls with fluorescent lights adding to the despondent nature of such a workplace. There were small non-window offices with old file cabinets and stacks of papers lying around on spare spaces. One large room had a mountain of freeze dried food.
The “War Room” or rather “Emergency Center Room” had a stage-like platform with some large TV screens behind it. Rows of ‘desks’ with landline phones faced the stage.
Actually, I wasn’t impressed. It looked like amateurs put things together. TV Show props do a much better job at looking professional.

My final take-away was that I would hate working there.
Drab. Ineffective. Paper pushing all day. Just a paycheck or career ladder endeavor.
I came away with the same take-away after listening to an executive for EPA Region 6 describe job descriptions at the Dallas office.
I have recently run across countless anecdotes of this Government Worker Syndrome when Regina relays to me the stories behind her recent Open Records requests with the City of Dallas Water Fluoridation Program.
The bottom line is that these government workers tend to only perform mundane tasks but without true curiosity nor interest in deeper understanding. It is an authoritarian dogma regimen with cush monetary perks. They just want to punch the clock, pass the buck, and ride a cruise ship to retirement.

Sounds a little like the “Oh my God we’re all gonna die!” recent hurricane shenanigans that seemed like it was a study of evacuation scenarios.
Tulsi Gabbard had the only sensible response to what happened: Immediate direct negotiations with DPRK to draft and sign a Peace Treaty to end the Korean “conflict” because the actual scenario is a real threat because of the current state of affairs. Accidental war is a real possibility in this situation. Iran is the other strong possibility of accidental war as is Syria. A False Flag implicating DPRK or Iran is also high on the list but that would initiate WWIII. Unfortunately the Empire will never negotiate a Peace Treaty because the North and South would then reunite and the Imperial troops would soon have to be pulled out.

well i did not get too far figuring out how that nbc news interview was set up surprise surprise… although i’m speculating, I think the hawaiian athouritys got the go ahead to orchestrate this event to entrench the public psyche into further paranoia thus making people flock to any proposed security measures that politicians will plan to roll out only adding water to an oil fire the uninformed will unwittingly make the problem worse by giving them more power and perpetuating the massive deception governments used to justify there destructive behavior that led people through wars and into the volatile situation that we are in today.

It’s the same thIng as 9/11, isn’t it? The result isn’t so much the immediate terror that the event generates but the residual sense of vulnerability to annihilation that is desired. This generates the believable “us-against-them†dynamic that is required for the rationalization, and general acceptance, of lethal retaliation. This “false alarm†can plausibly be explained as a mistake, but the effect has already been induced in the general population. Isn’t it also interesting that this took place in Hawai’i and not in Seattle, Los Angeles, or San Francisco? A likely U.S. target within reach of North Korean missiles, but with a small enough population (and a concentrated civil defense system) to be easily managed, and then much more easily contained, than in a larger population center. And it was much less expensive to produce than 9/11 too.

Like you James, I don’t generally trust officials making pronouncements of this sort as far as I can throw them. Why should we?
And all this leaves us with the necessity to speculate on what exactly is going on.
Almost like war games, we are forced to imagine all the possible next-moves our Evil Empire might make against us – a very sad state of affairs.
Luckily we are not actually warriors looking for war, just honest people who finally realize that these sick and dangerous bullies are not going to just go away of their own accord.

What I find interesting is that local “news portals” are almost completely ignoring this event. They usually jump at every occasion to fuel hype and hysteria, but not this time.
But, to be perfectly forthcoming, there is a handball championship going on, so that’s obviously more important than a possible prelude to WW3.
Aloha! I am currently living about 7 miles from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. I don’t have a cell phone, so I missed the alert. Went to a family picnic later that day and was surprised to hear everybody buzzing about it. Many got the alert on their phone, but many didn’t. This made everyone suspicious right from the get-go. Some were quite shaken up, though. I figure everybody has to die sometime, and this is a pretty nice place to go, if the time was now. People are full of aloha, the weather is beautiful. I was glad I didn’t have a cell phone, and I don’t plan on getting one any time soon. Better not to get fear mongered into a panic, I figure. Live till you die.

Ha! I relate. A lot of Texans just can’t handle Canadian warm-winter-weather, because it is too cold. Texans sure can’t drive on ice. Auto body shops make a killing when we have ice on the roads.
I live 4 hours north of Austin (Dallas area). It is colder and windy-er here, than in Austin (I once lived in Austin).
In fact, this Texas winter season we have had a longer stretch of below freezing consecutive days/weeks than what I have seen in more than a decade or two or three. At least this cold stretch it will kill some of the bugs. Some recent previous winter seasons were relatively mild, so the Spring insects were more prolific.
I ain’t a fan of cold weather, especially with a Texas wind. The other day it was 11 degrees F. These past months, I have been working outside in the cold, wind and rain, loading thousands of pounds on a truck per day like some young man (I am in my 60’s). It has been a long stretch of cold.
Three weeks ago I caught pneumonia. Did the supplements and even anti-biotics, but the symptoms did not abate. So, I think it was probably viral pneumonia. That did the trick for me. I was back to work the next day freezing my tail off.
I find, the best way to not crash your vehicle on an icy road is to hold of from driving. In my area we barely get below the freezing point, being on the coast and all, so investing in better tires really makes no sense when we get some snow every 10 years or so, while it keeps barely for a few days. So, my modus operandi is to just wait it out.
Disproportionate reactions like the ones shown in their video are something I have never seen in real life. I remember, while I was still a kid, there was a rampant hyperinflation going on people would form an hour long lines at the petrol station to stock up on gas before the currency gets devalued further. It was a bit of a frenzy, but people we’re panicking as much as trying to save a buck.
Hi i could be wrong but this might just be (mostly in the first place, followed by something far more sinister) a money grab. Here down under (in my state anyway) we have had a disproportionate amount of news and political bs about how our threat warning systems were not working properly and were outdated blah blah blah. Only watch TV when i have to but i was wondring what this was all about for us its bush fires hawaii missiles some where else hurricanes etc. Im pretty sure it will be made into a selection issue here (SA) next time around. My wife told me about the Hawaii thing and well she thought it was impossible to believe. Even the believers dont believe anymore. The world is changing.
Honestly I doubt anyone under the age of 50 in Adelaide believe anything beyond the football scores from MSM and most blokes double check them.
