As the US Congress inches closer toward a strike on Syria, many in the West are only now struggling to understand what the conflict is about and how the battle is effecting the Middle East. Now, geopolitical analyst and commentator Sharmine Narwani breaks down the Syrian war, outlining the major players and their motivations. This is the GRTV Feature Interview with our special guest Sharmine Narwani.

With the benefit of a 4-year retrospective on this interview, because having more data points usually helps form a better picture, I find Sharmine’s analysis a) very convincing, and b) very insightful.
The first time around, I had missed her point about the armed insurrection in Syria being slid into public consciousness with timing that would suggest just another in a string of populist uprisings in the Arab world.
We now know more about the South Pars/North Dome pipeline geopolitics involving Qatar, Iran, Russia, Iraq and Syria. The massive Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf straddles the international water boundry between Qatar and Iran. The US and Saudi Arabia are then involved in support of the Qatari position. We also understand the Saudi Arabian desire for Wahhabi ideological dominance a little better.
We can point to more Israeli actions that reinforce suspicions about plans for a Greater Israel, or at least lesser neighbours. And we now know the previously obscured fact that a major hydrocarbons find has been made in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Thanks to the alternative media, the world has now become far more aware of the anti-government proxy forces in Syria, who their sponsors are, the ways these proxies are financed, re-armed, re-supplied, and supported with sophisticated military intelligence.
It has also been explained why not having an air force hadn’t been a major military obstacle for Daesh & Co – that is until Russian air power arrived to support Syrian forces.
Great comment. Wish I had something pithy to add.
