They are also embarking on the “lets control internet because it spreads terrorism” train. You were spot on, James, they are just pieces of the same puzzle.
http://thediplomat.com/2015/12/chinas-minister-of-public-security-outlines-anti-terrorism-agenda/
“Guo singled out for special mention the need to prevent the spread of terrorist materials online, adding an interesting angle to China’s insistence on the need for “order†online at the World Internet Conference this week. That same point was highlighted last year by a CCTV documentary highlighting the Internet’s role in fostering terrorism. Guo’s speech comes just over a week after Islamic State released a new Mandarin-language propaganda recording, ordering Muslims to “wake up†and “rebel†against their oppressors. Beijing believes the spread of extremist material – especially via the internet – the major cause of the uptick in terrorist activities in China.”
Blimey, if urging people to “wake up” and “rebel” makes you a terrorist I’m in the poo…..
Thanks, James, for continuing to cover China’s social credit scoring system. Here is a heads up that this bit of social engineering is being subtly introduced in the US and other nations.
Two months ago my local paper reported the CEO of FICO responded to chatter that FICO was thinking about monitoring social media as part of the FICO scoring system.
“If you look at how many times a person says ‘wasted’ in their profile, it has some value in predicting whether they’re going to repay their debt,†FICO CEO Will Lansing told the Financial Times.
The gist of the article seemed to be FICO wasn’t using social media – yet. However, a rationalization was given that expanding the variables used to create FICO scores would help younger people establish a credit score.
From the Chicago Sun Times report on the story: “The company, creator of the FICO credit scoring system, is also looking at sifting through smartphone records, according to various media reports.”
WSJ floated this story Jan 8 2014 “Lenders Use Social Media to Screen Borrowers” also titled “Borrowers Hit Social-Media Hurdles”
(Tip to get around the WSJ paywall, Google the title of the article then click on the provided link.)

The WSJ article mentioned Kreditech based in Germany which is being used in Poland, Russia, Spain, Czech Republic. Another iteration is LendUp, backed by Google Ventures.
Now we know why many of our credit cards issuers (e.g. Discover, Citi Cards) have been providing free FICO score updates each month.
BTW, I came across trustingsocial.com, founded in 2013 by Nguyen Nguyen, listed as headquartered in the US. The business model is described as extracting data from social media such as Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and Weibo, then analyzing the information with sophisticated algorithms to sell to businesses for various uses. In the Innotribe Startup Challenge 2014 Workbook, Trusting Social’s executive summary states “Our team is comprised of PhD data scientists, banking experts, and award-winning programmers. Our advisors include banking leaders and world class scientists.” Of note, the CTO once worked on DARPA projects. A collaboration of banksters and scientists with blinders on. What could go wrong?
I am sure US will end up with SOMETHING like this at some time soon… Mine would be ‘0’.
Alibaba – ahhhhhhhh.
Tried buying samples of this type of product: LED Solar Lantern to start a small business:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/1-8W-hot-sale-new-LED_60121153092.html?spm=a2700.7724838.30.18.C8eyRB&s=p
– you have no idea – these products are sold online in the US at Sears and Kmart and Wal-Mart, but never in-store (never let them put their hands on an item that will teach them that they never need buy disposable batteries again).
Many of the models are designed to break early on – planned obsolescence to new heights.
This product however was available and promoted: http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Solar-Rechargeable-9-LED-Lantern/dp/B003JIP8VG
Guess what – it is maliciously (needlessly) engineered to “prove,” through hands on experience by the consumer that rechargeable batteries are just not as good as the type you repeatedly buy replacements for.
It is needlessly designed with an inadequate in-case permanent solar- panel-rechargeable battery, but also able to be loaded with an adequate amount of single-use batteries – that for instance will get you through a night of camping.
Tip of the iceberg.
First few email interchanges with Alibaba-connected online sales clerks from individual companies were OK – after a little lag, it quickly then started to deteriorate – finally I was sent bad products, even just beat-up already broken stuff. Lost my money. Never developed any sample store that could contribute to any start-up mode.
All around (I’m not an engineer) the products seemed purposely engineered to fail.
“Well, Ting, he’s pretty terrible in bed, but he does have a huge credit score… =p
Hideous. I wonder if you could have two identities – one linked to your credit cards and social security number created to meet the demands of the government and corporate world and the other for personal use to suit your real identity.
From the Ts&Cs of a job-finding website:
“We may also collect personal information which we have found from other websites that display information about you publically. For example, social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter, your online profile on your current employer’s network, any articles about you or any public listing of your profile.”
Maybe we are already being given a “sincerity consciousness” rating.
Man, no way i’ll earn “good social credit” with my twitter feed and youtube hystory lol
Congratulations James – you just got a mention on Zero hedge.
Enjoy your holiday – best wishes from New Zealand.

OMG! I’d read about the Chinese government roll-out over the last year. I find it truly “creepy” and also see it as a toe-in-the-water for the rest of the world. BRICS? Right. It’s simply another banking system now to be controlled by the East. It’s not the savior of the planet as so much internet jabber states. It’s still a banking system. Why would China give up power/influence/wealth for the good of the planet when they are socially engineering their own population into “good behavior”? That is just stupid. Not happening.
China to ban citizens with bad ‘social credit’ rating from taking flights or using trains for up to a year
President Xi Jinping’s plan based on principle ‘once untrustworthy, always restricted’ to come into effect on 1 May

Thanks doublek321!
March 18 2018 update
EXCERPTS
…People who would be put on the restricted lists included those found to have committed acts like spreading false information about terrorism and causing trouble on flights, as well as those who used expired tickets or smoked on trains…
… Those found to have committed financial wrongdoings, such as employers who failed to pay social insurance or people who have failed to pay fines, would also face these restrictions….
Well it seems to me that by creating a system like this, they will only encourage people who feel they have received an unfair rating to derail a train or bring down a plane.
Here in 2018
http://www.wired.co.uk/article/china-social-credit says
‘….It might sound like a futuristic dystopian nightmare but the system is already a reality. Social credit is preventing people from buying airline and train tickets, stopping social gatherings from happening, and blocking people from going on certain dating websites….”
The Sub-headline is “…Looking for love? In China, a good credit score could get you access to exclusive singles…”
I “think” it was G Edward Griffin who said year and years ago that in communist bloc nations the big stifling of dissent came from subtle removal of job and housing opportunities
also
“…Chinese citizens signing up for the wildly popular multiplayer shooter game Counter Strike Global Offensive must register using both their national ID and Sesame Credit score, according to state media outlet CGTN, and anyone caught using cheating software like ‘Aimbots’ which ensure perfect aim will have their Sesame Credit scores deducted, potentially affecting their real-life ability to get loans. “It’s the worst punishment in history,” Li Haiyi, vice president of Chinese game developer Perfect World, told CGTN…..”
Lol I guess???
