How Big Oil Steers the Environmental Movement

On paper, it would be almost impossible to find a less likely candidate for “Godfather” of the modern environmental movement than Maurice Strong. A junior high school dropout from a poor family in rural Manitoba struck hard by the great depression, Strong’s meteoric rise to the heights of wealth and political influence is itself remarkable. The sheer number of environmental organizations that he founded, conferences he chaired, campaigns he directed and accolades he received over the course of his career is even more remarkable: Organizer of the Stockholm Environmental Conference, founding director of the United Nations Environment Program, Secretary General of the Rio Earth Summit, founder of the Earth Council and the Earth Charter movement, chair of the World Resources Institute, commissioner of the World Commission on Environment and Development, and board member of a bewildering array of organizations, from the International Institute for Sustainable Development to the Stockholm Environment Institute to the African-American Institute.
But perhaps the most remarkable thing about Strong, this ubiquitous figure of the 20th century environmental movement, was his background: a Rockefeller-connected millionaire from the Alberta oil patch who divided his time between environmental campaigning and running major oil companies.
To understand how this came about, we have to examine the history of the emergence of the environmental movement. In the post-war period, the desire to control the population put on a new mask: protecting the world from resource depletion, pollution and ecological catastrophe. And, as always, the Rockefeller family was there to provide the funding and organizational support to steer this burgeoning movement toward their own ends.

For mine, this information helps hugely, as in order to push back against big oil (and any sub group of the powers that shouldn’t be) we need to know how they do what they do, as well as how they benefit. One of the biggest challenges that comes to mind currently, is how do we truly push back? For if we stop using all things oil based., sadly many of the alternatives are controlled by the same people who control oil…
It’s no so much the technology that matters, but how we use it.
I think Solar and Wind power for example have great potential to liberate people however alternative energy sources are only 1/3 of the equation. The other two important missing pieces are energy storage and the efficient use of energy.
Solar panels have become relatively inexpensive recently however solar panels are useless by themselves unless you connect them to the criminal elite’s power control grid.
To be truly independent you need your own storage so that you can go off-grid, funny how that deep cycle batteries required for personal energy storage are still hideously expensive and short lived, isn’t it?
Do they need to be so expensive? We had rechargeable nickel-iron batteries in early 1900 that could have a 100 year lifespan if looked after and made properly.
The other issue is efficiency. We live in houses where a refrigerator pumps heat into a room during summer, only to have the AC pump the heat back out of the room again. Good insulation is also a way to improve efficiency, however good insulation, like good batteries are also kept expensive. Inefficient devices require us to buy expensive mass produced energy off the powers that shouldn’t be.
I’m sure there is lot better technology that has been hidden away in the research labs that we never get to see…
Perhaps we need an open source movement to reinvent this technology and make it available to everyone?
The Internet-of-Things can be turned against the system if we try. The same technology can be used to develop Peer to Peer networks of our own devices that encrypt information and keep it away from the grid.
Technology such as Ardunios, ESP8266’s and LoRa radio modules allow people to develop their own electronic devices that can be off the corporate grid.
However it does require people to put a lot of effort to learning new things…

Agree w you totally.. My thinking re: oil not so much an issue of using vs not using technology. More a case of the challenge being that when we buy/use any technology that is derived from oil, we are supporting or at least helping to underpin the very individuals and corporations that we oppose and are seeking to overthrow. I’m certainly not suggesting we return to using sticks and stones in place of technology, simply thinking and wondering out loud how we utilise these technologies and yet minimise the support/ control that we hand over to these tyrants and their corporate entities.

There are a lot of examples of technology and innovation that have been held back or pushed to the side in order to perpetuate the status quo
Why so aggressive? It is certainly provable that many technologies have been held back and hidden in order to perpetuate the status quo…why come out seemingly swinging for an argument without anything to support your views? No BS involved…

Given that Marvin has stated that it is paranoid BS, I think the burden of proof lies with him. I was simply responding to his aggression and baseless accusation ( “paranoid BS”) towards Octium’s assertion regarding technologies being hidden. I’ll be happy to supply some links and references regarding this, even tho as I have stated; the burden of proof lies with Marvin. Given that I was writing my support of what you stated, Octium, I am not sure why you are turning the blowtorch around on me?

An anecdote which is currently being done on a large and also a small scale:
During the distillation process of alcohol production CO2 is given off. This can be fed into a greenhouse to accelerate the growth of plants and to also kill off the bugs. (Note: Greenhouses sometimes will purchase a CO2 machine for this purpose.) The mash left over from the alcohol production can be fed to fish, which in turn can be sold commercially. The fish poop can be used to fertilize the greenhouse plants.

I have always envisioned a voucher for Moonshine Gallons.
There is an entire “little community†which can be built around homemade alcohol production with many interchangeable products and/or co-op.
~ The farming of crops for the alcohol production, or the collecting of garbage for the alcohol production.
~ The growing of organic plants from alcohol production.
~ The raising of fish or crawdads from alcohol production.
~ Fertilizer from alcohol production.
~ Pest control from alcohol production.
~ Livestock feed from alcohol production.
~ Etc.
The interchanges within the community could go on and on, with people utilizing a unit of value scrip (gallon of alcohol) to pay for the home repairs or to pay for car maintenance or get a haircut. People easily have a reference point of value by seeing the price of gasoline at the local gas station.

ANECDOTE – circa 1972 – Earth Day
The first Earth Day was in the Spring of 1970. During the Spring of 1972, I led our Texas town’s High School in a big Earth Day event.
The auditorium was filled with all the faculty and over a thousand students. Each class, the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors had assigned specific outdoor areas of the school campus where they would pick up trash, plant trees, etc.
The High School was built on large tract land from an old World War 2 German POW camp. A military base was this small town’s main industry and we were at the height of the Vietnam War. So, the student population was very diverse; from Goat-ropers and Cowboys to Soul Brothers to Hippies to Jocks to military kids to… ..well…it was the Wild West.
The end result of the Earth Day event:
It was a disaster for faculty. Hot, extremely windy and dusty, with kids out of control. Most teachers just stood around and smoked their cigarettes.
It was a godsend for “the sharp studentsâ€, as off they went playing hooky. It looked like last bell as pickup trucks and Mustangs left the parking lot.
Actually, I didn’t want to lead this Earth Day event.
Girls. That was my undoing. Girls.
I was a Senior with shoulder length blonde hair, often wearing a green Army jacket, kind of a Hippie look. Normally, a student takes Biology as a Freshmen. Thinking ahead, I chose to take Biology as a Senior. This way I would be the only Senior boy in a Biology class which had lots of Freshmen girls.
And one of the few school “clubs†open to Freshmen, was the “Biology Clubâ€. When I went to the first meeting of the “Biology Clubâ€, I was elected President. The “Biology Club†later decided to sponsor Earth Day. So, that is how I ended up leading “Earth Dayâ€.
But here is the important part. Girls.
I lined up a double date with two Freshmen girls, myself and my best buddy. The girls seemed very excited. It was unstated “who would be with whoâ€. So, my buddy and I flip a coin. I lost the flip. From that coin toss, years later my buddy marries the girl and their son is now in his thirties.

While agreeing completely with your facts, I think that the situation is not that bad in one sense while it may be worse in a different sense.
DOWNSIDE: Us libertarians who are capable of using reason and logic to interact with the world and make life decisions are a minority of the world (perhaps something like 5-7%). This may be genetic in large part (the INTP and INTJ personality type of briggs test is very strongly associated with libertarian and has a very high genetic component: is a principle observation here). The other 93-95% of humanity REFUSES to assume personal freedom and responsibility of their own liberty. In fact, the sheeple mass insist on being controlled and would rather kill the messenger of liberty than listen to him. It is less than worthless to try to wake these people up. Make info available and let them be, with their televisions and sports.
UPSIDE: Overpopulation, pollution, destruction of the planet is bad and very obvious to anyone who has lived a long time and can see nature with his own eyes over even a short period of time. The sheeple (92-95% of all primate animals on the planet) absolutely refuse to listen to logic (my point above) and somehow need the oligarchs to manage them like, well, like sheeple. Without the oligarch and their internet of things etc. the sheeple will breed themselves into a collapsed environment. The sheeple need their oligarch lords for their own salvation. I dont like this conclusion but cannot escape the reality. This is a forgone result and we cannot fight the sheeple’s need for their lords.
The answer to this problem is for libertarians to develop their own discipline, learn skills for creating true wealth, and develop their own robust, independent communities outside the system. This is real possible. We need to focus on this instead of chit chat crapping our valuable energy and time away wringing our hands and lamenting the biological realities that we cannot change.
I’m sorry marvin but after reading your comment I get the impression that you haven’t really paid attention to the documentary. The whole point that it makes for eugenics is that it’s a pseudo science. How then you can say that you agree with what he said and at the same time contradict that. While it may be true that at the moment the majority of the people refuse to take responsibility for their own lives and live in freedom, I think that has more to do with the conditioning we are subjected to from a very young age rather than “genetics”. That’s why it’s important for those of us who were fortunate enough to have been “awaken” to certain facts about our world not to turn our backs to the rest. If we start to feel and act like we are “genetically superior” than them then we are not much different than those psychopaths mentioned on the documentary.

Sorry Dacajewetah but I think you misunderstand my comment.
You talk about “genetically superior” but no person can judge the superiority or inferiority of another, and it is dangerous for someone (yourself for example) to assert superiority or inferiority.
I pointed out facts. Two important facts are: 1. like it or not, the majority of people simply will not think or act like libertarians but absolutely must follow a leader, whether that be a TV character, sports character, or political character. I dont assert superiority or inferiority here. People seem happy following sports scores and political theatre (such as elections) and often express feelings of superiority to those who do not join their emotional group activity. I do not know of care if they are superior or inferior to a libertarian who may think independently, mostly because I really dont know which is best for long term survival.
The determination of “superiority” or “inferiority” that you assert is not something that is carried out by an individual but instead is a population characteristic that is apprehended by examining population drift over a long period of time. On a personal level I certainly do not wish my genes on someone else because I have so many defects, and do not pretend to judge myself or others as superior fit or inferior fit. If I consider the notion however of the value of emotional-group-think, I can easily conclude that a herd or sheeple characteristic may be superior to a libertarian independent one, considering the need to survive in a population by getting along. Either way, any conclusory notion is evil and is condemned by one side or the other…..lol I see such follow-the-alpha-male and group traits in our goats (surprisingly sociable and clubby) and can see how such has been a good survival trait. Maybe the same is good for humans, but I have no personal opinion on this superiority or inferiority topic that you raise.
Perhaps you would like to debate someone with convictions on this topic.
Although I disagree with much of what Stefan Molyneux says, I admire his brave attempts to address these factual realities which touch upon your superior and inferior arguments, but which are avoided by most people due to the name calling “racist!” “genetically superior!” etc. engendered thereby. I am content with the realization that I simply dont know most things and can only focus on one thing, which for me is power electronics and DIY energy generation, which has led me to explore China, which also has precipitated superior vs inferior argumentation from friends who are skilled in technology and have a silicon valley uber alles view.; and the little steps one can take to walk away from the madness to secure liberty. This may be thought of as a compulsion and deviant behavior when compared to the larger group. Which is “superior” might be determined looking back 100 years from now.
Finally to reiterate, to me it is clear that this journey for liberty is not for most people. Most people after getting the information James so wonderfully presents refuse to believe it or laugh at it from a superior attitude point of view. The feelings of superiority exist from all vantages. Guys like Stefan can address such at their peril. I am sticking with energy resource development.
