Episode 320 – Echoes of WWI: China, the US, and the Next “Great” War

09/22/201757 Comments

In the early 20th century, the world’s dominant superpower looked warily on the rise of a competitor to its supremacy. The machinations of the British to contain the rise of Germany led inexorably to the First World War. Once again in the early 21st century, the world’s dominant superpower is looking warily on the rise of a competitor. Will the American Empire’s machinations to contain the rise of China lead to the Third World War? Or is the American/Chinese conflict another engineered conflict for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many? Join James Corbett as he presents “Echoes of World War I” to the Open Mind Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It is always a pleasure for me when you voluntarily give us an insight of your knowledge and wisdom. When you señor James share the results of the interactions of your brain-cells with other senses of yours on what is happening in our world, this always leads for me to an euphoria in my brains and stimulates my common senses. When your person shares your thoughts with us, for my person it feels like having a seventh sense. Also how your answered the questions of the audience were brilliant with a typical señor James touch.. Yesterday my own brain cells were dancing Salsa and Bachata at once due to your excellent independent work señor James….

Military tensions, cyber espionage accusations, a brewing currency war; with every passing day, the headlines paint a convincing portrait of an emerging cold war between China and the West. But is this surface level reality the whole picture, or is there a deeper level to this conflict? Is China an opponent to the New World Order global governmental system or a witting collaborator with it? Join us in this in-depth edition of The Corbett Report…

    Ok, now I’m ranting AND I’m late…

  7. rich3 says:

At least as important as comparing GDP charts is comparing national debt charts. The USA is currently in so much debt that even printing currency has a near neutral effect on GDP. How did it look in britain before WWI? The connection with the debt-based currency scam is relevant to both empires.

    • herrqlys says:

The Boer wars with their military ineffectiveness, devolving into inhumanity, corroded public faith in the British aristocracy. And the colonies of empire that sent their military forces to South Africa were then to bring the message back home with their own troops.

The Boer imbroglios also haemorrhaged British Imperial finance, although the usual suspects made fortunes from the manufacture and sale of war materiél. The dire state of the economy was as much a factor as the industrial and capital ship challenges from Germany in deciding in a British course of action that led to the Great War.

Fairly recently, the grandson of British foreign secretary Edward Grey publicized a copy of a letter his grandfather had received from King George V imploring him to make Belgian neutrality a causus belli with Germany. I don’t think the grandson understood the implications of this letter, because he was so proud that his grandfather had been personally contacted by the king.

European royalties and their aristocratic entourages were neck-deep in machinations for war, most likely because they still had glorious visions of what war entailed and felt a personal power in their ability to shape world events. Wealth and power can bring about their own undoing without any other aids.

      • herrqlys says:

My memory didn’t serve me too well about the details of the “letter”. I should have gone back to the source to check the details before posting (which I usually do).

What I was referring to was actually a memorandum of British Foreign Minister Sir Edward Grey’s personal meeting with King George V on August 2, 1914. And it was composed by Grey’s nephew, Sir Cecil Graves, in 1933 after a meeting with the elderly George V. It was discovered in the archives by Graves’ grandson, Adrian Graves, who had inherited Sir Cecil’s papers.

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02987/PX5689635_Lewis-Wh_2987125a.jpg

From an article in The Telegraph:
        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-one/10991582/Revealed-how-King-George-V-demanded-Britain-enter-the-First-World-War.html

When Sir Edward said the Cabinet had yet to find a justifiable reason to enter the conflict, the King replied: “You have got to find a reason, Grey.”

Historians have no record of the meeting which took place at Buckingham Palace on August 2 1914, two days before Britain went to war.

It was revealed in a letter written by Sir Cecil Graves, Sir Edward’s nephew, who met with the King a month after his uncle’s death in 1933.

George V had summoned Sir Cecil – a future director-general of the BBC – to the Palace, where he offered his condolences before recalling the events of 1914.

The King “told me of the interview he had with Uncle Edward two days before the outbreak of war. It lasted for one and a half hours,” Sir Cecil wrote.

“He told me that Uncle Edward had said that he could not possibly see what justifiable reason we could find for going to war. HM said in reply, ‘You have got to find a reason, Grey.'”

  8. PeaceFroggs says:

No doubt the US has become full on fascist as it seeks ways to retain its dollar hegemony, but do some of you actually believe there will be a “Great War” between the US and China?

Need I remind some of you that the US could barely handle Iraq in 2003-2017+. Iraq, a country that was first weakened by the Iranians during their war in the 80’s, then left decimated by a coalition of nations after the first Gulf war in 1991, incapacitated following a decade of heavy sanctions and sporadic bombings during the 90’s, and some of you believe the US is equipped to take on China mono e mono?

The US was only able to get a few NATO countries to follow them in Afghanistan after 9/11 (most of them left after a few years), and the only other significant NATO power that was foolish enough to follow the US into Iraq were the British.

I mean, even during the cold war, the US wasn’t crazy enough to take on the Chinese and/or the Russians directly. Instead they resorted to proxy wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and other smaller skirmishes around the world.

I may be wrong, but I believe the next decade or so will be bring about more of the same type of proxy wars like they had during the cold war.

If there is ever a “Great War” between the US and China, then the US is gonna have to find a way to get England, the EU, Japan and a bunch of countries to form an alliance prior to, a sort of Triple Entente v2.0., and that ain’t about to happen with Trump at the helm, in fact I’d say the little US fascists are busy fomenting hatred in Germany right now in order to weaken Merkel.

  9. herrqlys says:

Bravo, James, bravo. That was a tour de force that touched upon so many points that I myself have come to understand. From the audience reaction, it would seem that there are many, many other people that also see the world for what it is.

Still, to drive the points home requires incessant repetition. After all, this was the modus operandi that got western society into its insouciance and myopic world view.

  10. generalbottlewasher says:

History does repeat itself. The graphs and charts are what gives Carrol Quigley’s book Tragedy and Hope such an appealing draw to the mind numming facts.300 pages cover the multitude of treaties and compacts that if the general populace new of would have stopped any envolement in support for any war. I don’t know if Americans are so keen on King and country as the Queens subjects are but we are equally susceptible to other forms of propaganda tailored for our unique attatuides. Public schools are just gateways to millitary service and at the same time millitary service offer’s a gateway to education. However for most, the contract young people sign doesn’t turn out to be the contract delivered. James comes thur brilliantly in the end and can only wish it could penetrate the patriotic brainwashing that blinds most around Joklahoma to that history ,of mind numming facts, that would keep a normal, sane person from supporting another war.
James will someday tell us ,in just as scholarly a fashion ,the role of Zionism,French Rothchilds-Chinese financial connections and the role Israelis have and will play in the machinations leading to
WW-III. Until then we can fill the comment section with all the possible reasons why no mention at all of the real culprits exists. There is the 3 hundred pound gorilla in the room. I hope the listeners can appreciate the clever and articulate way you danced around the topic without steping on the gorrillas toes.
Last of all James you could improve on your appearance. Pilato said something that has stuck with me ,sometime back, great people discuss ideas while weak people discuss the person, or something along that line. I deplored the troll comments about your appearance, no offense mate, I want to send you ,in the kindest of motivations, a new tie and sweater for Boxing day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6dOPMgdjLo&feature=youtu.be&t=13m47s

In my opinion the tea leaves highlight two extremely important “similarity aspects”
    RESOURCE COMPETITION
    and
    TRADE COMPETITION
Corbett discusses them starting around 29:48
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6dOPMgdjLo&feature=youtu.be&t=29m48s

I believe that the “American Dominance Neocon-type Agenda” faction will not stand by silent when it comes to dominating “resource” and “trade”.

On the flip side, we live in an era where Big Boys chase the buck and to heck with any national allegiance.

  12. generalbottlewasher says:

My dear Texifino friend , you have made A very good observation however , the big boys are given access to the crumbs that the bigger boys( who are invisible to the rest of us) then trickle down crumbs to our level. The Rockefeller men don’t want to be seen, heard, or will they tolerate being made public. We can track their movements after the fact with graphs and news headlines but generally as you say “big boys chase the bucks and to heck with… ” everything except being invited to the Rockefeller mans table.
An inlaw Im aware of, works for Winthopes Rockefeller foundation and works tireless (60hrs) week cataloging every speck of the High- resolution satellite pictures of his sectors that he manages . He must go and confirm vast mineral inventories, so he travels alot. He is so brainwashed there is no reaching him, he thinks it good sustainable ,healthy work for the planet ,mother nature needs help, like his, to survive. I ask him who shares this info? He said the men in the governments that are Rockefeller men with the same desire to protect the earth as his boss. Now tell me what happens to miners and peasants who claim the land you are in charge of from 7 miles up? This question made him so uncomfortable he couldn’t’t respond. Now Im not invited to Christmas anymore. So the point i would like to make is we are the Rockefeller mans biggest fear. Should we use the law to right the ship of state like they did to gain control? That would make us no better than themselves. The standing by crowd you mentioned need us, however the Rockefeller men really don’t need the big boys until we start acting in our own interests. What to do? I think Im going to not show up for the next Rockefeller man war if posible and keep spreading the word about who is doing the inventories and who gets access to those inventories. Bless T.C.U. THIS weekend.

I found most interesting that tidbit about how unadorned males supporting the war effort by other means than dying in the trenches and having their eyeballs eaten by huge rats were issued badges as to prevent being marked or shamed as cowards.

I knew of the white feather thing and that’s one of those bits of information that really sticks and one has to ponder over it for a while. The badge tidbit makes the entire deal that much more ridiculous.

That kind of social pressure mush have been beyond comprehensible.

Finally got around to watching this one. Worth the wait! As for the Battle of Copenhagen, I am one of those who had been completely ignorant of that one. And here I sit with my state approved MLA in history. Shame, shame, shame. Of course, having just gotten out of the military, I had made it a point to study as little war as possible. While I’m sure no one knows what this war will look like, I’m pretty sure it will be far worse than we can imagine. Of course, if it does happen, then the eradication of our species would be a good thing that would be well-deserved. We should know better by now. There is no excuse anymore. When you get down to the brass tacks of it all; it isn’t the fault of our so-called leaders. It’s our fault. We pay attention to them and do as they ask. It makes as much sense as obeying the crazy guy yelling at the demons in the street, but hey; we are so smart aren’t we?

    My thoughts…
Could this be an aspect to the “Next Great War”?
We are seeing this joint faction of U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, etc. nations aggressively asserting control.

…and going further, but with speculation…
    the Russia demonization & Trump
Could Trump actually had been “a silent part” of the anti-Russia PsyOp Campaign? It really would be a beautifully designed PsyOp.
You feed it to the Liberal media who take the bait. Trump, all along knows it is a ruse and doesn’t mind the heat. It helps to fulfill the Big Agenda.
But regardless of whether or not Trump was a part of the anti-Russia PsyOp, probably doesn’t matter. The anti-Russia PsyOp helps to move the ball down the field.

A missile gets fired on the Saudi capital. A missile, which was allegedly built in Iran and smuggled to Yemen, just to be fired at Saudi Arabia.
According to initial reports, two Saudi princes died back to back in 24 hours: one in an “accidental” helicopter crash, the other during a firefight that broke out while security forces were trying to arrest him. On November 7, Saudi Arabia’s information ministry spokesman said that “Prince Abdulaziz is alive and well”. However, the prince could not be independently reached for comment by the media.
Other high-ranking members of the establishment and the royal family — the two tend to be one and the same in Saudi Arabia — get arrested on charges of corruption, with their bank accounts frozen.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri unexpectedly resigns after he was summoned to Riyadh by his Saudi-backers.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia accused Iran of conducting acts of “direct military aggression” and accused Lebanon of “declaring war” on Riyadh by allowing Hezbollah “aggression” against the kingdom.
All this happened in a span of just a few days.
With ever-growing security challenges and problems at the regional level, the crisis that took hold of Saudi Arabia does not seem to be slowing down.
One contributing factor to the ongoing crisis is a major split in the Saudi royal family: the power struggle that resulted in the former crown prince being deposed and replaced with a new one, a move that shook things up quite a bit inside the country. The echo of this can be seen in the current “anti-corruption” persecution, enforced by the current Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

The company recently invested US$9.1 billion in a stake in Rosneft and it has also spent heavily on oils storage capacity and transport infrastructure at home. Oil Price Drop Imminent If Moscow Says “No” To Extension

    EXCERPTS
As the November 30 meeting in Vienna of OPEC and its partners in the oil production cut deal nears, worry has returned …
…We’re talking about Russia, the world’s top producer and exporter…
…Reports emerged last week that Russia is considering a delay on the decision to extend the cut…
…But there may be another reason for Moscow deciding to opt out of the extension. Lower oil prices could actually be more beneficial for the Russian economy. Macro-Advisory analyst Chris Weafer lists six ways in which lower oil prices would be better for Russia, and all of these make sense, counterintuitive as this line of argument might seem at first glance…

      EXCERPTS
…The current rise in oil prices is more of a fear trade right now, driven by fear of what is going on in the Middle East, rather than a result of growing OPEC chatter or inventory reports…
…“The oil premiums are very narrow going out to the future, which means that this is more of a fear trade in the front month,”…
…“To me, this is more of just another farce of what OPEC is trying to do, and trying to push these prices higher,”…
…OPEC and its non-OPEC partners in the production cut deal are scheduled to meet in Vienna on November 30 to discuss the extension of their pact. While just a month ago a nine-month extension to the end of 2018 was the base case of all analysts, now there are growing voices that OPEC may delay the decision to early next year….

Nov 28, 2017 –Forget OPEC, Putin Is Calling The Shots In Global Oil
      https://oilprice.com/Geopolitics/Europe/Forget-OPEC-Putin-Is-Calling-The-Shots-In-Global-Oil.html
      EXCERPTS
…One OPEC source that requested anonymity, told Bloomberg that Putin is “calling all the shots.” RBC Capital’s head of commodities Helima Croft called the Russian President “the world’s energy czar.” Indeed, Russia seems to have replaced Saudi Arabia as the market swinger, along with U.S. shale…

…This is how Putin played Riyadh. It was clear that Russia’s participation in the cut deal would be crucial for prices to respond in the way OPEC wanted. To secure this response, OPEC’s leader cozied up to Moscow, with the first ever visit by a reigning Saudi monarch and a string of preliminary investment agreements, not to mention the purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system. All this despite the fact that Russia is a strong ally of Riyadh’s arch-enemy, Iran, and has shown no signs of willingness to reconsider its regional alliances…

…First, the lower the oil prices, the less motivated U.S. shale producers would be to expand their own production. Like OPEC, Russia sees U.S. shale boomers as the main threat to its reign in the global oil world. Second, the Russian economy benefits from a weaker ruble, and lower oil prices mean a weaker ruble. Third, the Russian economy has shown strong resilience to the oil price crash. This resilience has surprised those unfamiliar with recent history, but it is one more reason for the world’s current number-one oil producer to have second thoughts about a nine-month extension of the oil production cuts.

Russia is the producer everyone is watching ahead of the OPEC meeting. It may very well sign up for the nine-month extension but if it does, it will very likely do it on its own terms—and Saudi Arabia and the rest of OPEC might need to brace for these terms, whatever they may be, whether economic or geopolitical.

  22. oeo says:

“Göring: Why, of course, the people don’t want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.
Gilbert: There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars.
Göring: Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

The power of conditioning from a young age is strong. After years of having to pledge allegiance to the flag when you are a child, and the entire culture of America that is based around the flag and honoring the soldiers, it is hard to mentally and emotionally break away from. People feel that they are obligated to fight because it is honorable and noble. Just like people who have severe emotional trauma need intense therapy to overcome the emotional damage, so too do people need a form of therapy to overcome the perpetual trauma that mainstream America delivers. The therapy in this case is education of what’s actually going on in this world.

…Russia last year became China’s biggest oil supplier… …At the same time, Saudi imports fell by 7.8 percent in November, to 1.056 million bpd… … But Russia is not the only one eating Saudi Arabia’s market share in the world’s top importer: the U.S. has been exporting crude at unprecedented rates. Last year, the average U.S. oil shipments to China stood at 180,000 bpd for January to September alone.

May 2019 – Trade War with China …and talk of war with Iran & Venezuela or whomever

On May 19, James published an article “Reminder: Neocons ADMIT They Will Lie Us Into War” which entails some of the current events this late Spring 2019.

For many months, Trump and China have been having trade talks.
By May 2019, the trade talks have turned very aggressive.

China Global Television Network (CGTN)(TWITTER) published this article on May23, 2019.

“When goods do not cross frontiers, armies will.” This quote is often attributed to Frédéric Bastiat. The influential classical-liberal economist from 19th-century France was known for writing “the candle maker’s petition” to the French parliament. In the satirical letter, he imitated the tone of local lighting manufacturers griping about competition from a rival who overtook their market with rock bottom prices. The rival? The sun.

It seems that Bastiat remains just as relevant over two centuries later while a saga between the world’s two economic titans unfolds.

The protracted trade war that escalated earlier this month unnerved investors and wobbled global stocks. While countries involved are counting the cost, fears have been stoked that the full-scale trade battle might culminate in another world war. History certainly rhymes, especially when we look at what triggered the previous two world wars…

… There’s no denying the situation may escalate if each side perceives the other’s actions to be filled with malice. This perception would lead to ever more serious retaliations that could prompt a full-scale war, as each side is fighting not only on the economic front, but on one that is tied to their identities in a dynamic multi-polar world.

As such, trade is only the opening salvo for a conflict that is spilling into tech and other areas. It would be wise to resolve this trade crisis before we face the first great war of this century.

    Stablecoin birthed from chaos:

From an article by Engdahl published yesterday on ICH:

“…Moreover, history teaches that the transition to a new global reserve currency may not proceed smoothly.” He indicates that means it often needs wars or depressions, as he cites the role of World War I forcing out sterling in favor of the US dollar…

…The Bank of England Governor proposes in effect that the IMF, with its multi-currency Special Drawing Rights (SDR), a basket of five currencies—dollar, Pound, Yen, Euro and now Renminbi—should play the central role creating a new monetary system: “The IMF should play a central role in informing both domestic and cross border policies. … Pooling resources at the IMF, and thereby distributing the costs across all 189 member countries…” For that to work he proposes raising the IMF SDR funds triple to $3 trillions as the core of a new monetary system.

Then Carney proposes that the IMF oversee creation of a new payments infrastructure based on an international “stablecoin.” Referring to the private Libra, he clearly states a “new Synthetic Hegemonic Currency (SHC) would be best provided by the public sector, perhaps through a network of central bank digital currencies.” Note that Carney, a former Goldman Sachs banker, is mentioned as a leading candidate to replace Christine Lagarde as IMF head…”

From an easy to read article with nothing new for most folks of this site but this paragraph stood out:

“…The unfortunate fact is that monetary crises in unstable governments like those of Greece, Venezuela, and Spain have already precipitated a number of spikes in the crypto markets. When the Cypriot government sought to resolve the country’s 2013 banking crisis by subjecting its citizens’ bank deposits to a nearly 7 percent haircut, the price of bitcoin shot up, likely because, at that point, many southern European holders of euros with debt-ridden governments surmised that bitcoin might represent a more reliable home for their money than the Cypriot banks could provide…”

However, (though I realize that cryptocurrency and blockchain are not the same thing) yesterday I had an IT/Accounting student who was convinced that blockchain is merely a fad because too energy inefficient.

    ?

    • mkey says:

Well, it is extremely inefficient due to the scaling thing. It’s doubtfull bitcoin will ever be used on a wide scale for anything other than speculation. Well, that and racking up electricity/hardware bills.

      • manbearpig says:

Well, I was going to say that the Lightening Network was going to upgrade Bitcoin by solving its scalability problems but… seems it’s not working out as well as hoped. BUT others are also working on solutions so we’ll see.
Then again, maybe ITER will be so successful so fast that Bitcoin’s Energy efficiency will no longer be an issue! 😎
I probably won’t be around to pop the champagne on that one but… maybe my progeny will!

        • mkey says:

I’d much more prefer a scrip based system. Digital or physical, currency is just a currency. Too easy to manipulate with and tends to centralize (practically dogmatize) trust.

In a scrip based system you know EXACTLY who’s behind the scrip i.e. the promise.

    NEWS
    Bloomberg – November 21, 2019
Kissinger says US and China in ‘foothills of a Cold War’
    https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/kissinger-says-us-and-china-foothills-cold-war

    EXCERPTS
BEIJING (Nov 21): Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said the US and China were in the “foothills of a Cold War,” and warned that the conflict could be worse than World War I if left to run unconstrained.

“That makes it, in my view, especially important that a period of relative tension be followed by an explicit effort to understand what the political causes are and a commitment by both sides to try to overcome those,” Kissinger told a session of the New Economy Forum. “It is far from being too late for that, because we are still in the foothills of a cold war.”

Kissinger said China and the US were countries of a magnitude exceeding that of the Soviet Union and America, and that the world’s two largest economies, who are locked in a protracted trade war, “are bound to step on each other’s toes all over the world, in the sense of being conscious of the purposes of the other.”

“So a discussion of our mutual purposes and an attempt to limit the impact of conflict seems to me essential,” he said. “If conflict is permitted to run unconstrained the outcome could be even worse than it was in Europe. World War 1 broke out because a relatively minor crisis could not be mastered.”

Kissinger, 96, said he hoped trade negotiations would provide an opening to political discussions between the two countries.

“Everybody knows that trade negotiations, which I hope will succeed and whose success I support, can only be a small beginning to a political discussion that I hope will take place,” he said.

Kissinger spoke hours after Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan addressed the NEF (New Economic Forum), saying his country was committed to peace and would follow through on policy changes despite facing challenges at home and abroad.

“Between war and peace, the Chinese people firmly choose peace. Humanity cherishes peace,” he said. “We should abandon the zero-sum thinking and cold war mentality.”

The US and China are trying to assemble a partial trade agreement amid wider tensions ranging from human rights concerns over pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and the detention of Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region to strategic competition in the South China Sea. Kissinger said he thought a solution to the unrest in Hong Kong was possible, if not likely, and that he hoped it would be resolved via negotiation.

The New Economy Forum is being organized by Bloomberg Media Group, a division of Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg News. Other guests include Microsoft Corp founder Bill Gates and former US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson.
