09/15/201437 Comments

This month on Film, Literature and the New World Order, Tim Kilkenny of RevelationsRadioNews joins us to discuss the 2011 propaganda film, “Contagion.” We examine “Participant Media,” the media venture of billionaire Jeff Skoll that produces “social action campaigns” for each of its 55 films and seeks to shape public debate in five main target areas, including pandemic disease. In this episode, James and Tim dissect the propaganda techniques and message of the film and point out how the film seeks to shape the opinions of the audience.

  1. Fosca says:

Thanks James for the view on Contagion, which at least is a well done movie technically and while pretty much predictable, still not boring IMO. I guess the credit goes to Soderbergh, who certainly is a good director.

Few aspects I would like to comment on. At least I am hoping to add one or the other new aspect to it.

    Part 1

Good guys, bad guys – a standard plot – almost.

As the start is dramatic (loss of wife and son), there is a rather unusual emotional detachment, as you have discussed already.
The good guys are the CDC guys (still not fault free, as they try to take benefit for their beloved), while the bad ones are the “evil” blogger and companies (trying to take simply commercial benefits, while jeopardizing the societies health). This is certainly a very black and white picture. Very linear story line – no real twists.

    Is there a message?

DON’T PANIC – CDC / WHO / Official orgs … will take care.

For an American movie there is rather a small amount of “individualism“ presented as the major dogma, I think. In other movies it require individuals to convince the officials, that they are following the wrong path and only the hero is able to save the world like in “White House Down” (please DO NOT watch). Thus I think the message is rather naive, in a sense encouraging large scale society collaboration.

Pandemics are not an invention of the 21st century and not necessarily “made up”, thus it is not unreasonable to “prepare” for such an event.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic

Whether the threat is real or simply the fear is abused is a different thing. At least I did not feel the movie was the intended to create more (!) fear.

Still preparing for the idea of an apocalypse?

Pretty much in the same year of the release of Contagion, the CDC has triggered a strange blog on Zombie_Apocalypse in order “to raise public awareness of emergency preparedness.”
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preparedness_101:_Zombie_Apocalypse

This blog and the 2013 movie “World War Z” are much more of predictive programming than “Contagion”, I think.

What I am not much clear is the background of the Survivalism (prepper). Of course another way to control by fear, but I wonder if you James could put this into relation to your own ideas of creating more local independent setup of society. What will happen in case things go wrong on a large scale (catastrophic disaster)?

    Part 2

In general: Can’t rich people (like Jeff Skole) simply do good things?

Jeff Skoll’s ambitions in founding Participants Media are fine IMHO. At least the company admits openly to play and educational role in the society. Also the track record of Participants Media is looks promising.
What is missing in general worldwide is critical thinking and knowledge. Thus I believe there is a lot to help by education. Why not via this media movies?

The downside of it is of course the possible misuse of a financial power, like down by large corporations in hiding or (more rare) openly. It is a question of control and influence. The latter is getting more important in case some entity is trying to seek for an influence. This is where I also do see a severe risk, which is worth a closer look (which I am not able to give). According to Wikipedia in 2008 there two changes for Participant Media, joining up with UN and a new studio from the United Arab Emirates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Dhabi_Media).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participant_Media
“… The company continued to expand its social advocacy and outreach efforts in 2008. In January 2008, it joined and made a financial contribution to a $100 million United Nations-sponsored fund which would provide backing for films which combatted religious, ethnic, racial, and other stereotypes.[70] Fueling the company’s expansion was the creation of a $250 million fund with Imagenation, a start-up film studio based in the United Arab Emirates which is a division of the Abu Dhabi Media Company. …”

Let’s keep an eye on Participants Media and what will come out in the near future.

Looking forward to the next movie. ?

    Cheers,
    Fosca

as a record producer i am well aware of abu dhabi media, they part own the company VEVO with google and the utter scum that own my back catalogue universal music group ( i wrote about that here if youre interested http://www.theransomnote.co.uk/music/filling-void/kris-weston-filling-the-void/ ) this deal is evident when you go on youtube. try browsing music videos on youtube without VEVO being shoved in your face, but it goes further than that. take the song ‘stay with me’ the title has been used by about 50 different artists including the faces and al green. but have a look at a google search for that title. 7 pages of results from some crappy unknown VEVO artist before one mention of al green or rod stewart.

so its clear these companies are all in bed together, altering yuor perception of things on their websites to earn themselves cash. you thought google ordered results on popularity didnt you ? nah, they just do whatever makes themselves the most money. to hear participant media are doing a deal with abu dhabi media makes me highly suspicious – not that i wasnt already – but it went up a notch 🙂 as you can see from this small example, these people are not to be trusted.

Having just listened to your excellent talk about the movie,Contagion, I would like to call your attention to the black listed documentary Vaxxed. It proves and points out how the CDC lies and falsifies the science. There is actually a whistle blower that is not being allowed to give evidence of how the CDC lied about the MMR vaccine and autism connection. Thanks for your important work.

  4. JadeEyes says:

Much gratitude, JC (and all guests) — I truly appreciate these pertinent flashbacks. The analyses of the propa-tainment (entertain-o-ganda?) industry are of particular interest to me.

  5. Ethan Hunter says:

I just wonder…is the coronavirus just another scare like SARS, Zika, et. al.?

    • alexandre says:

Yes and it’s a much bigger issue than just scare. Check Corbett’s work on the subject. Type “virus” in the search and grab a sandwich and a glass of milk.

  6. manbearpig says:

Well. There it is. Coronavirus in Lyon. It was nice knowin’ y’all.

    “…Cases in France double
France’s health minister said there was a significant increase in cases of coronavirus, with the country confirming 38 cases on Thursday, more than double the number reported previously.

Twelve of the newly confirmed cases were linked to two people in the department of Oise, in northern France including one patient who died earlier this week of the virus.

In France, some cases were connected to people who had recently returned from Italy. Two others had recently come back from a trip to Egypt.

Another person is in intensive care in a hospital in Lyon…”

Nice to know you too, MBP. São Paulo also has its first case.

Thanks for Yves and the translation. What a strange piece.

Shoot, I was thinking this FLNWO was a new one, what an idiot. I was waiting someone to mention the coronathingy. It’s from 2014. Duh.

The meaning of life link doesn’t work. Oh shit, you left out the “y”. So I went to “outube.com”, which apparently is a porn site. I thought “has MBP finally gone insane?”

      • alexandre says:

Very interesting piece you gave us there, MBP. Le Canuts, Saltire et al. Very sad. Made me feel so ignorant. I shall send it to my friend in Paris, the great composer who knows things like that, drinks wine and smokes, like the good old – and gone – times.

  8. mik says:

I’ve heard on radio WHO said coronavirus is an example of infodemia.
Funny, the one instrumental in producing paranoia is warning about it.

Next, it is not the first time the institution of world governance is acting somehow benevolently. Other ones I know: BIS warning for 2008 crisis, IMF was against harsh conditions imposed on Greece, WHO declared glyphosate potential carcinogen

Last times I’ve asked people I met what do they think about quarantining a big city in Europe, is it possible.

Result is approximately fifty-fifty, surely has some bias.

  9. KungFuFil says:

How timely, I just re-watched that movie yesterday to refresh my memory on what it was saying and how it portrayed things.

At 37m of the interview Tim touches on the aspect of “It will come from China”, how prescient for this round of events. Although this time I think we’re in for the long haul. We’ll see in a few months, hopefully it won’t be too long of a long haul.

One thing that I picked up on is how they don’t really go into the breakdown of social order during the quarantine. Sure there’s some rioting, the neighbors of Matt Damon seem to get burglarized, but otherwise it all seems to work out. Water, electricity, cell phones, etc all keep working fine for the 100+ days of the outbreak. Food doesn’t seem to be that much of a problem. 16 year old kids follow their curfew after being caught once. Clothing stores are fully stocked just a few days after the vaccine is released. Congress has time to schedule hearings about a government employee breaking protocol. There’s no reconstruction to be had, it’s just business as usual.

I think the real message of the movie is that the quarantine worked. You never see the CDC people with masks, most of the country seems uninfected. Public assembly aren’t prevented, people are still free to protest, and they do so in a fairly orderly fashion. All of this implies that the outbreak was contained. The rest of the country, and most of the world, was able to keep the global supply chains running.

I guess the Government did a good job in that universe.

Btw, I see that was LFNWO#19… Covid-19. *cue spooky music*

  10. wylie1 says:

Maybe I wasn’t listening during SARS and other supposed crisis pathogens but I don’t recall in those instances, the propagandists trotting out some truckers to say that the supply chains WILL be impacted. Those spots occurred early on in the Coronavirus info-propaganda.

So whether real or manufactured are the Powers that currently be, planning on starving people to cause riots, mayhem, and people killing each other for food, to further their depopulation agenda?

Did anyone really check to see if the legislators actually changed their mind to vote funding for the CDC after watching Contagion, or was that just propaganda on top of propaganda?

Now I know why some who have been paying attention to the various fear promotion propaganda scenarios, see the repetition repeating and again.

On the virus in Swiss Land the Swiss ban all gatherings of 1000 or more. Alice Cooper and Carlos Santana have to cancel shows in Zürich. Schools will remain open for spring break to curtail travel for students. Hope it blows over.

  12. HomeRemedySupply says:

The end part of the video has some real take-home.

    I agree with Corbett’s perspective:
“…so much…does have to do with our underlying immune system,
and whether or not it is in good shape,
and whether or not we are properly receiving good nutrition,
    and things of that sort,
much more so than it does about any magic vaccine…
…plenty of rest, good nutrition, in a stress free environment…
…Ultimately, our immune systems are really miraculous in so many different ways….”

The Bat, the Pig, the Cook

There is a lot to be said about this “naturally made mutation” and also how some of the theories of COVID-19’s origin side along that angle…but maybe along with a snake or anteater.

Personally, I have a hard time with the idea of naturally made mutant viruses that jump species like a grasshopper in the garden.

I even read that precept in an older scientific paper which mentions bat viruses, but I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it as a normal phenomena.
Kind of like HIV. In the free love of the 60’s and 70’s, no one was worried about HIV.
But then again, there is the cowpox/smallpox story.
    So, what do I know?

    • alexandre says:

If I may, the word “alimentation” came to mind more than once reading and watching all the stuff. This is left out by everybody, specially the guys at the CFR talking about coronavirus, like we’ve accepted the modern Rockefeller medicine’s perspective on what health is, how the body and life work etc. Royal R. Rife already proved back in the 30s that cancer has nothing to do with genetics and the like, but with fungus etc, but we think of that as preposterous – even if he cured 100% of 18 terminal cases with the supervision of the then medical elite. AIDS as well. Good arguments for it having a lot more to do with drugs and malnutrition than with any virus (not to go into bio-warfare). Also nonsense of course. If a body is healthy – meaning nutrition and other balances (think PH, clean air etc) – the immune system can take care of most problems, but the old gang upstairs always pushes for viruses. Even scurvy they wanted to blame on a virus. Vitamin C – gone, what do you know. I’m starting to wonder…do viruses really exist? And if they do, are they such miraculous mass killers, for which the solution is always government intervention and vaccines? Not according to Peter Duesberg. And what are people eating now? Industrial Codex Alimentarius horse manure, so could that have an effect on health? Kill the immune system eating shite and microorganisms go party. I don’t know, just some food for thought – excuse the pun.

  13. HomeRemedySupply says:

In this digital age of videos, you can pick up some great values on DVDs in affluent neighborhood garage sales.
    I have tubs of DVDs.

Coincidently, I watched Contagion (circa 2011) about 2 or 3 weeks ago during dinner over two evenings.

One of my first thoughts during the film was
“Did this film play in China?” (or on DVD in China?)
The reason I had that thought was because China seemed to be overly dramatizing this coronavirus in many respects.
Certainly Chinese citizens are under a lot of stress from authorities. The stress alone would make anyone sick.

    • Octium says:

I haven’t watched Contagion, but it is interesting about the China association.

It also featured in the opening title of the Terry Nation series of “Survivors” from 1975. Which featured a virus spreading world wide after being released from a Chinese lab.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAyjkaFYnzE

What is interesting is that the original series was released in 1975 before the actual Swine Flu scare in 1976 and a rebooted version of the same series was released in 2008, again a year before the rebooted Swine Flu scare in 2009.

      Coincidence of course!

  14. alexandre says:

Just watched Octium’s link to the 75 Survivor series (1st eps) and one thing that I found interesting was how the reasoning itself makes it clear how such scenario is next to impossible. When the old man at the school starts lecturing about how the future is going to be like – we’ll have to learn everything all over again etc – it becomes clear that the argument is totally flawed, written by movie people that, either have no idea how life works, or, as any advertising job, want to push a made up premise to justify the whole fantasy – and something else. As a TV movie, and old style, it was great fun to watch, but to imagine that this idiocy “goes live” from time to time, as in the current coronavirus fad, is just mind boggling. Is this time going to be the time when they install full blown marshal laws, quarantines, lock-downs and the works? Or is it just one more little craze we have to worry to death until no one remembers it anymore?

Hey, remember when we were all dead because of Fukushima, and how the pacific ocean didn’t have any fish left?

Thanks, Octium, for the Survivors link. I didn’t know that series (didn’t come to Brazil at the time). Great fun.

  15. James says:

I’m a bit confused. What are we supposed to walk away with from this? Maybe or maybe not this is some sort of international coordinated government action. To what end. To frighten or manipulate us to go to war with some imaginary enemy…or somehow make money for pharma or some other greedy players? I live in France too. Respected medical professionals have gone on TV saying that at the hight of the annual flu season, up to a thousand people die, just in France, week due to the flu (not Coronavirus). So is this really anything to be concerned about. Although it’s hard to insulate oneself from the media hysteria.

  16. Alain.Graulus says:

Funny how they keep using the same programming techniques over and over again.
I saw today an interesting post from Willem Felderhof about the movie “In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)” and the propaganda.

I know I am not the only one that wonders about this and i have no evidence to make this suggestion however, this is the Corbett report and many of us are here because we believe the gov and media are bs. However, how many of us think the coronavirus are a planted US weapon on China? I can’t be the only person that allows this to circulate in my mind.
