Beware Americans Bearing Gifts: NGOs as Trojan Horses
Kazakhstan is stripping USAID workers of their diplomatic immunity. China has passed a law strictly regulating foreign NGOs. Russia has just officially declared the National Endowment for Democracy to be an undesirable NGO. India has placed the Ford Foundation on a security watchlist. What on earth is going on? Why is country after country restricting, limiting or kicking out these US-based aid agencies and tearing up decades-old cooperation treaties? Could it be that these NGOs are not what they appear to be on the surface? So pleased to hear that countries are catching on to the NGO games that the U.S. plays. I can’t believe that anyone would trust our official government, much less the secret one. Truly ashamed to be an “Amerikan”.
In Syria, US NGOs were not allowed, so they funded EU NGOs to do their dirty work.
I remember a talk with a representative of a German NGO, he said that Syrians must either remove the Baath government, or the US should come and destroy the entire country to give Syrians a fresh start. This was in Feb 2002.
Financing activists in Syria was not allowed, so these NGOs used some funny ways to pour money to their agents. For example, a Dutch NGO funded a publishing house to translate Dutch poetry into Arabic, and then purchased all the editions of every book the publisher published at the retail price.

In August 1971 the BNDD announced the location in Southeast Asia of twenty‑nine drug refineries, fifteen of them allegedly producing heroin. At least 17 US-based and local groups receiving foreign funding were targeted, according to activists and Egyptian state media.
An official said at least one of the US-based groups was operating without proper permits.
The US state department said it was “very concerned” and urged authorities to stop the “harassment” of NGO staff.
Some civil society activists have reported that employees were prevented from leaving while searches continued.
“This is not appropriate in the current environment,” state department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, adding that senior US officials had been in touch with Egyptian military leaders to express their concern over the raids.

The US-based groups targeted include the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), loosely associated with the US Democratic and Republican parties.

Is this in the same ballpark of banning/restricting foreign NGOs or Indian Government is using this as a excuse to ban well intentioned NGOs that might derail “Make in India” campaign (http://makeinindia.com) by raising environmental concerns.
As China slows down India is picking up the slack, by becoming next exporter to the world to keep world economy going on its ZIRP credit binge. Rinse & repeat?

I highlighted the Ford Foundation watchlisting because that seems to be different than the de-listing of the various other groups. There is no doubt a political agenda at work here that goes beyond the scope of what I lay out in this article, and I have heard various theories for why this is happening now. If you’re on the ground in India or keeping close track of this, please do keep us informed as this continues to develop. It probably deserves a report unto itself.
